What are Local Green Spaces?
Local Green Spaces (LGS) are green spaces that are of special importance to local communities. They must meet a specific set of criteria and if the Council agrees, they will be designated and protected from development through the Local Plan.
Local Green Spaces need to meet the following criteria which are set out in Para 107 of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). The Local Green Space must be:
- In reasonably close proximity to the community it serves;
- Demonstrably special to a local community and holds a particular local significance, for example because of its beauty, historic significance, recreational value (including as a playing field), tranquillity or richness of its wildlife; and
- Local in character and not an extensive tract of land.
